When students have learning or behavior difficulty at school, the school personnel will request a conference with parents.  These conferences are called Child Study Team Meetings.  Parental, and if necessary, community involvement is critical.  A key to helping a student is to address problems early.  No one can assume that, with time, problems will go away.  More meetings, tests and/or evaluations may be necessary.

With parent permission, a student may be evaluated.  Student evaluation is the systemic examination of all areas related to the student’s problems (health, vision, learning, social and emotional status, general intelligence, academic performance, and motor skills) by evaluation specialist.

Students who are deemed eligible may be placed in the Exceptional Student Education program.  At the time your child is placed in this program, you and your child’s educators will evaluate him/her and complete a document called an Individual Education Plan or IEP.  IEP’s are valid for one year and each year you will be invited to review and update the IEP.  The IEP will address your child’s strengths and weaknesses and will help educators provide the appropriate program for your child.

Students with disabilities may be entitled to receive special accommodations and modifications while at school.  These will be determined at the IEP meeting.

There are several diploma or certificate options available to students in the ESE program, ranging from a standard high school diploma to a certificate of completion.  By state law, a student with a disability must still pass the FCAT to earn a standard high school diploma.
